Brief History of the Indianapolis Children’s Museum

From its inception in 19925, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum has been unique among youth arts institutions for its emphasis on social themes. The original collection, exhibited in a small carriage house, consisted of family mementos and treasures solicited from parents and grandparents by children living in the city’s many ethnic neighborhoods.

The museum moved four times before ground was broken on its current location in 1973. By the time building was finished three years later, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum was the largest children’s museum in the world.
