What is Storyland?
The inspiration to create Story Land occurred in a European country only a few years after the end of World War Two. In 1950, the US Army sent Bob and Ruth Morrell to Germany. There they met a gifted and creative doll maker who designed dolls that were created from children’s stories. Her name was Frau Von Arps, and after she sold these marvelous collection of dolls to the Morrell couple, she gave them some advice. She told them that when they returned home from Germany, they might want to build a small village for their prized dolls. But Bob and Ruth’s imagination went far beyond that.
From those collection of intricately designed dolls, the Morrell’s felt compelled to bring those dolls to life in a village that would make all childhood stories and characters come alive and real.
In the summer of 1954 amidst the backdrop of the New Hampshire’s majestic White Mountains, Story Land was born. At this time there was only one ride called Freddy the Fire Truck. It was a real Fire Truck that drove its guests along a path amidst the woods. Some of the original storybook characters on display were the Old Woman in the Shoe, Peter Rabbit, the Three Little Pigs, Humpty Dumpty, and others.
In these early years many said that this crazy idea would never survive, but every year Bob and Ruth would put all of their profits back into the park and add new features and improve existing attractions.
Bob and Ruth passed away in the 1990’s and their two children, Stoney and Nancy took up the management of Story Land Park. Stoney managed it in the mid 1980s until his own passing in 2006. Then in 2007 the Kennywood Entertainment Company family of theme parks took over the operation from Nancy.
