Financier Philip Hill, who plans to diversify the laxative business into a major company, purchases the Beecham estate. Beecham Research Laboratories purchase Brockham Park where scientists later discover penicillin. Glaxo absorbs Allen and Hanburys, the first seed company. Smith, Kline and Beckman merge with Beecham to become SmithKline Beecham. Glaxo and Wellcome merge to become Glaxo Wellcome.

In the year 2000, GlaxoSmithKline is formed through the merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham.
