In 1941 Carl Karcher and his wife, Margaret, borrowed three hundred and eleven dollars against their Plymouth automobile. Combined with fifteen dollars that they had in a savings account, they were able to purchase a hot dog cart, which they used to start a business on the corner of Florence and Central in South Los Angeles, California. One stand turned into four, and eventually in 1945 Carl had earned enough money to open a stand alone restaurant in Anaheim, California that was called Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue.

In 1956 Carl Karcher opened the first two Carl’s Jr. Restaurants. They were given this name because Karcher considered them to be smaller versions of his drive thru establishment. The restaurant chain was soon recognized for its fast service and bright five point happy star logo which it still carries today.

In the 1960s’, Carl’s Jr. Restaurants were the first and only fast food restaurant chain to offer partial table service. They also gave the customers the opportunity to dine in carpeted dining room areas complete with music.

With the 1970’s came the first headquarters for Carl’s Jr. Restaurants which was located in Anaheim California. At this time there were more than five thousand people employed by the restaurant chain.

Today Carl’s Jr. Restaurants are ranked number four in burger restaurant chains, coming in only behind McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. They continue to offer great and innovative burger choices to all of their customers at affordable prices. There signature burger choice is the Six Dollar Burger, which first debuted in 2001. The Six Dollar Burger got its name because it was said to be the equivilent of burgers served for this average price at pricier sit down restaurant establishments but available to everyone at Carl’s Jr. Restaurants for a fraction of the cost.
