Menards Information
Menards is a large chain of stores in the Midwest, geared highly toward home improvement. The company is a privately held franchise, and its headquarters are located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The company has over 250 stores in over 10 states. The company boasts locations in Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. The company also has a sister store called Midwest Manufacturing. Midwest Manufacturing manufactures many of the products that are found in a Menards store, such as Ultradeck and MasterCraft.
Menards does not release its yearly sales figures. However, it is believed that the chain is the third largest in the US next to Home Depot and Lowe’s. The company’s estimated revenue is 8 billion dollars a year.
In 1959, company owner John Menard, Jr. was building utility buildings to pay his way through college. However, the workload soon proved to be too much for one man, and John was forced to hire additional laborers, and to purchase additional equipment. He graduated from college in 1962, which was when he purchased a piece of land in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He then built a shop and office for his business. Menards was officially founded in 1962.
His customers would often ask about buying lumber and other products from him. This enticed him to build the first Menards Cashway Lumber store. In 1969, John Menard added manufacturing facilities on his land. These sites produced nails, steel, pre-hung doors, boards, treated lumber, and trusses. However, the headquarters was damaged during the Wisconsin Derecho in July of 1980. In 1994, John Menard sold his utility building division. In 1998, the company opened another distribution in Plano, Illinois. In 2005, Menards opened an ecommerce website called Menards Online Collections. Finally, in 2007, the company opened two distribution centers in Shelby, Iowa and Holiday City, Ohio. Both centers are over 500,000 square feet in size.
Menards is the third-largest home improvement chain in the United States, and was ranked 24th on the list of America’s largest companies by Forbes magazine in 2006.
Menards has used a constant ad-marketing campaign for the past 20 years. In the beginning of the campaign, their television commercials featured a figure known as “the Menards Guy”, who was played by Ray Szmanda. However, in the late 1990s, a young woman took the place of the Menards Guy. However, in recent history, a man named Bo Landry has taken his place. The company still uses a cartoon Menards Guy in their print ads and in-store signs. In addition, all Menards commercials have ended with the same “Save big money at Menards” jingle for over 20 years. However, during the holidays, this jingle changes to “Warm season’s greetings to you all from Menards”. In addition, the commercials are fondly remembered for the banjo music that plays behind them. A banjo player from Wisconsin recorded the music for a meager sum of 50 dollars. The music has been featured on every Menards commercial for 20 years.
Menards stores are commonly recognizable by their green and white external appearance. They have been known for fantastic Black Friday prices on everything from TVs to home improvement products. In addition, some Menards even sell groceries.
